AWS to implement new Local Zone in Taiwan, expanding infrastructure

On June 6, 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of a new AWS Local Zone in Taiwan. AWS Local Zones are a new type of infrastructure deployment that brings AWS computing, storage, database, and other services closer to densely populated, industry-focused, or IT-centered areas at the cloud edge. This allows enterprise and institutional customers to deploy applications with millisecond latency near their end-users or on-premises data centers. AWS Local Zones enable customers to use core AWS services locally while seamlessly connecting to other workloads running in AWS Regions with the same flexibility, pay-as-you-go model, APIs, and toolsets. The new AWS Local Zone will expand AWS’s existing infrastructure in Taiwan, including the high-performance, highly secure, and developer-friendly content delivery network (CDN) service Amazon CloudFront, the AWS Direct Connect network service linking AWS Regions and private networks, and AWS Outposts, a fully managed service that extends AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to customer sites.

Most customers can meet their latency requirements by running applications in AWS Regions. However, some customers want AWS infrastructure close to their end-users and on-premises data centers to meet ultra-low latency demands and deliver a seamless experience. The new AWS Local Zone helps customers in Taiwan achieve millisecond-level performance for applications such as remote real-time gaming, media and entertainment content creation, live video streaming, engineering simulations, augmented reality and virtual reality (AR, VR), and edge machine learning inference. Managed and supported by AWS, Taiwan customers no longer need to spend extra time and effort handling procurement, operations, and infrastructure maintenance for low-latency applications. AWS Local Zones also allow customers to run specific applications in local data centers in Taiwan and seamlessly connect to AWS Regions while ensuring ultra-low latency benefits for hybrid deployments using familiar AWS APIs and tools.
